Seven of Hearts 2013 Armstrong Vineyard Pinot Noir, Ribbon Ridge, $35

seven-of-hearts-armstrong-vineyard-pinot-noir-2013-bottleWillamette Valley winemaker Byron Dooley took his five-clone harvest, leading with Pommard (50%), in late September/early October. It was a move that came days after the torrential rains had made their way across the Pacific after a Southeast Asia typhoon. Armstrong Vineyard, one of the southernmost, lower-elevation sites on Ribbon Ridge, and a partial whole-cluster fermentation program allows for enticing aromas of fruit punch, dusty plum, orange zest and cedar. There’s a nice approach to the palate with a continuation of plum and cherry juice, backed by a hint of saddle leather. It’s low-alcohol and food-friendly finish brings touches of cinnamon, light toast and clove.

Rating: Excellent

Production: 98 cases
